Abiquiu

The village of Abiquiu is best known as the home of Georgia O’Keeffe. You can find Cerro Pedernal, which O’Keeffe made famous from her many paintings.

Inspired by a friend, and wanting to dig deeper into the historical significance, I found so much more to the story. Ancient pueblos thrived here as early as the 14th century. Centuries later freed detribalized slaves, the Genízaro, settled in Abiquiu, living at the threshold between Spanish colonization and the Native American frontier. From this place begins the Old Spanish Trail, a demanding route once stretching from Santa Fe to Los Angeles, a path carved by trade, endurance, and the meeting of worlds.

Having spent more and more time here, it’s understandable why it made such an impact in the art world. The landscape is a stunning, quiet and sprawling desert scene and I hope to continue to return.
